Rabbits do have delicate systems, but they are fortunate to be able to enjoy many foods that are both safe and nutritious for them. Here at Natural Rabbit Care, we are trying some new and exciting recipes to give our rabbits the added benefit of a diet full of variety and packed with nutrients. Here’s is one of our latest–this is one bunny salad recipe that all my rabbits enjoyed!
Borage, Peppermint, Comfrey and Green Apple Salad
This recipe makes about 1 packed cup of salad, which is acceptable for rabbits weighing 2 or more pounds.
- 1/2 cup fresh borage (calms nerves and reduces stress)
- 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves (calms tummy troubles, is astringent and anti-inflammatory)
- 1 Tb fresh comfrey leaf* (contains amino acids that aid in boosting protein levels; can be helpful in preventing colds, diarrhea)
- 1 Tb peeled apple (if you are using an organic apple, you may leave the peels on; remove seeds, they are poisonous)
Chop all leaves and apples into bite size pieces, toss together, and feed to your rabbits immediately, or refrigerate and feed within a few hours (do not allow salad to wilt or your rabbits may not eat it).
*There is some argument amongst rabbit owners as to whether or not comfrey is safe to feed rabbits on a daily basis. If you are not positive that comfrey is safe for your rabbits, please do your research on this herb, or you may leave it out completely and still have a fantastic salad to feed to your rabbits.
